I just wanted to share info on the LBG used by the US military that you'll more than likely find in surplus stores, catalogs, and online shopping to clear up the differences in gear. The reason I'm doing this is because not all of use are going to be able to get our hands on the latest and superior gear right away. First is M-1956 LCE/ M-1967 MLCE (AKA Vietnam Gear) The only difference between the two is that the M-1956 is made of cotton duct and the M-1968 is made of nylon due to tropical warfare demands on the gear for more durability over cotton. These two types where used by frontline troops until around 1973/74. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Modernized_Load-Carrying_EquipmentNext is the more well known ALICE gear used starting in 1973- early 2001. ALICE is Almost the same set up as the M-56/68 gear except most of the fastener were replaced with plastic closures instead of metal on the M-56/67 models of gear. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/All-purpose_Lightweight_Individual_Carrying_EquipmentThird is the IIFS that the US military was going to switch over to completely but didn't. This uses a LBV with fixed ammo pouches and attached to the web pistol belt of the first two systems that came before it. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Individual_Integrated_Fighting_SystemIn closing I would just like to say MOLLE is a good LBG system but until used MOLLE gear comes on the market more widely it's going to be out of most peoples price range for the quality stuff. Sure you can go but a knock off MOLLE vest for Hong Kong or where ever else but, how long will it really last?

I'm going to be going with a MOLLE knockoff from cheaperthandirt.com and I think that it should last me a good while, as long as I take care of it well. Plus, the benefit of going this route is, if I start out with knockoff stuff, and one day buy a quality vest, I can still use the knockoff pouches until I get those. OR I can buy a knockoff vest and real pouches, and just convert to the quality vest later, saving me more money.

Dave, that is basically what I did. I started out with just a CTD Mil-Spec plate carrier and a double triple mag panel by them. I then bought a number of Tactical Tailor pouches for it since they make some of the cheapest gear that is also of exceptional quality. From there I purchased my Eagle plate carrier with cummerbund and threw my TT pouches on it. Since then, I have been slowly adding and upgrading the pouches on my vest to the exact specifications I desire. Another cheap maker of quality pouches is Blackhawk, however, I refuse to purchase or use Blackhawk gear.
Knockoff gear won't get "Oohs" and "Aahs" from others, but it really is a good starting point.
